Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay, Singapore

24 Maggio, 2014

The project Gardens by the Bay an integral part of Singapore’s City in a GardenVision, designed to raise the profile of the city globally whilst showcasing the best of tropical horticulture and garden artistry. The stated aim of the project is to raise the quality of life by enhancing greenery and flora in the city.

The project – winner of edition of the MIPIM award in 2014, having won the special jury prize – is one of the largest garden projects in the world and is intended to become Singapore’s main urban outdoor recreation space, and a national icon.

Located on reclaimed land in Singapore’s new downtown at Marina Bay, the site provides a unique leisure destination for local and international visitors.

At a total of 101 hectares, the project comprises three distinct waterfront gardens – Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden and Bay Central Garden. The commission to design the 54 hectare Bay South Garden, the largest of the three gardens, built on reclaimed land and located next to the Marina Bay Sands, was won in 2006 by a team led by Grant Associates (landscape architecture) and Wilkinson Eyre Architects – including also Atelier One, Atelier Ten, Land Design and Davis Langdon and Seah – following an international design competition launched by the National Parks Board of Singapore to masterplan by the bay.

Bay South Garden (completed and opened to the public on June 29, 2012) has been designed with a series of sustainable energy and water technologies, distinct ecosystems which will enable the gardens to function with maximum environmental efficiency and to showcase those habitats most at risk from climate change. The garden at Marina South will be home to some of the site’s most spectacular structures, including two Cooled Conservatories which will be among the largest climate-controlled glasshouses in the world, a grove of Supertrees (18 stylized trees) reaching almost 40-45 metres in height, about 226,000 plants from every continent (except Antarctica), a 30-metre-high man-made waterfall, natural cooling water basins of large size and futuristic structures, that form a new landmark for the city, enjoying views back across Marina Channel to Singapore’s centre.

The masterplan is a fusion of nature, technology and environmental management. A lake system which takes into account through the design the aesthetic and hydrological aspects within the gardens.

At the heart of Bay South Garden is the Cooled Conservatory Complex, the focal point of the structure.

The Conservatory Complex (24,500 sqm), situated along the waterfront of Marina Reservoir, is an architectural icon, a attraction and a showcase of sustainable energy and building technologies that display plants and flowers from the Mediterranean-type climatic regions and Tropical Montane environments. These are among the largest climate-controlled glasshouses in the world, each with own distinct character:

  • the Flower Dome (1.2 hectare) which features a cool-dry climate of mediterranean and semi-arid subtropical regions like South Africa and parts of Europe similar to Spain and Italy

  • the Cloud Forest Dome (0.8 hectare) which replicates a cool-moist weather condition found in Tropical Montane regions between 1,000 to 3,500 meters above sea level, such as Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia, and high elevation areas in South America.

The construction of the glasshouses is special in two ways. First of all by being able to have such large a glass-roof without additional interior support (such as columns). Secondly because the constructions aims strongly at minimizing the environmental footprint.

The form of the biomes not only is optimised structurally, but also works well environmentally by containing a large volume within a relatively small surface area. The principal design challenge is the need to maintain the high light levels required by the plants whilst minimising the associated solar heat gain.

The Conservatory Complex was conceived as an integral part of a wider ecosystem in which the structures work together, minimising the environmental impact. Therefore, the site includes a wide range of additional attractions, between the main ones:

  • the Supertrees, eighteen structures (40-45 metres in height) that perform a multitude of functions and containing tanks of rainwater collection for irrigation, photovoltaic cells that harness solar energy for lighting, thousands of plant species that grow on their coating; are vertical gardens connected by aerial walkways which offer visitors a unique perspective on the Marina Bay and a bistrot at the top of the tallest tree;

  • the Horticultural Gardens is a showcase the best of tropical horticulture and garden artistry, and provided a mesmerising experience for visitors through two collections: the Heritage Gardens (themed garden “Plants and People” that highlights the important role of the plants in their respective cultures) and the World of Plants (themed garden “Plants and Planet” that emphasizes the relationships amongst the various plants and the the biodiversity of plant life on the planet);

  • Dragonfly Lake, a lake system 1km long lined by boardwalk and aquatic gardens; is characterized by the presence of a Dragonfly Bridge that connects the city to the central gardens and creates a landscape setting for the Supertrees and Conservatory Complex;

  • the Marina Promenade is a 1km tree lined walkway along the waterfront edge linking the city centre with the gardens;

  • the Events Lawn is a large open space capable of holding concerts and events for 10,000 people or more;

Bay Central Garden acts as a link between Bay South and Bay East Gardens. It stands at 15 hectares with a 3-kilometre waterfront scenic promenade from the city centre to the east of Singapore, while Bay East Garden is 32 hectares in size and it has a 2-kilometre promenade that embroiders the Marina Reservoir; it designed as a series of large gardens each with its own specific character and theme. More future developments of Bay Central Garden and Bay East Garden are based on the theme of water.

Several plans for pedestrian and vehicular linkages from the surrounding developments and public transport hubs have been put in place to increase accessibility and create a transition between the Gardens and its surrounding landscape.

The Gardens by the Bay integrate environmental design and sustainable development principles, challenging the Singaporean climate, working on a reclaimed waterfront and using innovative technologies to create recreational experiences in the heart of the new downtown at Marina Bay, for both local residents and visitors from around the world.

  • la Flower Dome (1,2 ettari), caratterizzata da un clima fresco-secco delle regioni mediterranee e subtropicali semi-aride come il Sud Africa e zone dell’Europa simili alla Spagna e all’Italia;

Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay, Singapore

  • Supertrees, diciotto strutture (40-45 metri di altezza) che svolgono una moltitudine di funzioni e contengono serbatoi di raccolta dell’acqua piovana per l’irrigazione, celle fotovoltaiche che sfruttano l’energia solare per l’illuminazione, migliaia di specie di piante che crescono sul loro rivestimento; sono giardini verticali collegati da passerelle pedonali che offrono ai visitatori una prospettiva unica su Marina Bay e un bistrot nella parte superiore dell’albero più alto;
  • gli Horticultural Gardens costituiscono una vetrina dell’orticoltura tropicale e dei giardini artistici, e offrono un’esperienza affascinante per i visitatori attraverso due collezioni: gli Heritage Gardens (giardino tematico “Piante e Persone” che mette in evidenza il ruolo fondamentale delle piante nelle rispettive culture) e le World of Plants (giardino tematico “Piante e Pianeta” che enfatizza le relazioni tra le diverse piante e la biodiversità della vita vegetale sul pianeta);
  • Dragonfly Lake, un sistema lacustre lungo 1 km fiancheggiato da una passeggiata e da giardini acquatici; è caratterizzato dalla presenza del Dragonfly Bridge che collega la città ai giardini centrali e che crea una scenografia di paesaggio per i Supertrees e il Conservatory Complex;
  • la Marina Promenade, un viale alberato di un 1 km lungo il waterfront che collega il centro della città con i giardini;
  • l’Events Lawnè un grande spazio aperto in grado di ospitare concerti e manifestazioni per 10.000 o più persone;
